What Is the Eisenhower Matrix?
The Eisenhower Matrix (also called the Urgent-Important Matrix) is a decision-making framework popularized by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It helps you categorize tasks into four quadrants based on their urgency and importance, so you focus on what truly matters.
The Four Quadrants
- Do First (Urgent + Important): Crisis tasks, deadlines, emergencies. Handle these immediately.
- Schedule (Important + Not Urgent): Strategic work, planning, personal growth. Block time for these.
- Delegate (Urgent + Not Important): Interruptions, some emails, others' priorities. Hand these off.
- Delete (Not Urgent + Not Important): Time wasters, busy work. Eliminate these.

Tips for Better Prioritization
How many tasks should be in each quadrant?
Ideally, keep "Do First" to 3β5 items maximum. If everything feels urgent and important, you need to re-evaluate. Most people overload Quadrant 1 because they confuse urgency with importance.
What if a task fits multiple quadrants?
Ask yourself: "What happens if I don't do this today?" If there are serious consequences, it's urgent. Then ask: "Does this align with my long-term goals?" If yes, it's important. Use both answers to place it correctly.
